Executive Summary

Nestled within the Sahyadri Range of Maharashtra, Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary (PWS) spans 52 sq. km and boasts diverse habitats, including forests, wetlands, and coastal areas. Despite its ecological significance, Phansad faces increasing anthropogenic pressures that endanger its unique biodiversity.

In response to these challenges, Green Works Trust (GWT) has launched a comprehensive conservation initiative aimed at protecting and restoring Phansad's natural heritage. This initiative adopts a multifaceted approach, empowering local communities to become stewards of their environment by equipping them with the tools and knowledge to combat threats to wildlife.

Through strategic interventions encompassing community engagement, habitat restoration, contextual education, sustainable livelihood development, and waste management, the project aims to disrupt destructive activities like habitat degradation and unsustainable practices within and around the sanctuary.

The project's geographic focus spans the districts of Murud and Roha talukas in the Raigad district, where conservation hotspots and tribal communities coexist. By promoting community involvement and awareness, the project aims to foster a culture of conservation that resonates across ecosystems and communities.

Anticipated outcomes include tangible reductions in environmental degradation, measured through metrics such as improved habitat quality and reduced anthropogenic pressures. Qualitatively, the project aims to cultivate a sense of responsibility and collaboration among stakeholders, fostering long-term conservation efforts.

At its core, the initiative envisions a future where Phansad thrives as a haven for biodiversity, free from the threats posed by human activities. Through concerted action and community empowerment, the project aspires to create a legacy of resilience and renewal, where nature's treasures are safeguarded for generations to come.
